Introductions
Bill Mason welcomed everyone to the meeting and commented on the wonderful networking
opportunities available to all the attendees.
The minutes from the February meeting were approved.
Pete Endres presented a brief progress report from juwi:
The feasibility study is on target to be completed in April.
There are some exciting economic opportunities to look at:
• Stimulus package
• Production Tax Credits
• Loan guarantees
• CREBS
• State stimulus monies
Peter will update the April meeting regarding the Community Engagement plans along with
Brown Flynn.
Executive Director, Steve Dever has been busy establishing dialogues with key manufacturers in the off-shore wind business and also leaders in workforce and economic development issues. Steve recently met with representatives of the St. Lawrence Seaway and learned about the number of wind components that travel the Seaway. There will be an off-shore wind conference being held in Washington DC the week of March 30. The Task Force will be glad to release some of the offshore wind information from the April release of the Feasibility Study. The competition for developing off-shore wind is heating up, with Michigan and Wisconsin looking at their Lake shores.
Greg Zucca gave a report on the upcoming AWEA annual conference in Chicago in May, 2009. The State of Ohio will have a booth with will include interactive kiosks and literature handouts. 2 posters from the Task Force will be presented by Dave Matthiesen on April 7th.
Herb Crowther, MagaJoule Storage, talked to the meeting about energy storage. There are 3
markets for energy storage:
1. Bulk Storage
2. Large Scale Commercial and Utility Storage
3. Renewable Storage- Intermittence
The goal should be to bring industry and academics together. Bill Mason asked how proven the technology is and Herb assured him that testing and research have been occurring for over 7 years.
Andrew Watterson talked about the Stimulus Package and Energy Block grants. The city of
Cleveland is currently working on some residential energy efficiency programs and addressing workforce issues for future projects.
Councilman Matt Zone told the meeting that a land-based wind turbine zoning ordinance would be on the City Council agenda on March 30.
Ed Weston and the Great Lakes Wind Network are working diligently on wind turbine quality assurances and training workforces.
Dave Matthiesen gave a report from the Research and Development Committee. The video camera on the Crib is capturing great images. The lidar machine will be retrieved soon and the information will be shared at the CWRU research showcase on April 16th.
Ray Headen recently spoke in Washington DC and updated his audience on the work being done by our Task Force.
Hon. Lillian Greene asked the Task Force if they would participate in National County
Government week, May 3-9, 2009.
